COMMITTEE REPORTS: Education/Youth/Senior News By Arlene Fleishman The Department of Education has notified the City Council that they are planning to begin initial design scope on the construction of the two High Schools on Linden Place and 31st Road. The Association is working with our local elected officials to fight against this ill-conceived project at the Linden Place site and find a more appropriate location. We cannot give up our determination to kill the project at that site. An Essay contest will be initiated by the MLCA and offered to the 3rd thru 8th graders at P.S. 214, 21, 242, and J.H.S. 185. The winner on each grade will receive a $200.00 United States Savings Bond. Each grade will be assigned a specific topic for their essay. The Association will be reaching out to the community at large to join the committees and become an active participant in the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association. If you would like to join Arlene Fleishman, Brian Lewis, Josie Cruz, John Choe in the Education, Youth & Senior Committee, please contact us at mlcaboard@googlegroups.com or P.O. Community Development News By Jason Brown With the defeat of the congestion pricing plan, the future of subway and bus service expansion in our area is now in doubt. Fees from congestion pricing were supposed to fund the following improvements: Q76 bus service on Sundays; a new Q94 Super-limited bus between downtown Flushing and the Bronx, replacing the X32; a new express bus serving College Point; additional buses on the Q12, Q13, Q28, and QM3; and, implementation of Communications Based Train Control on the Number 7 subway line. These transit improvement projects are now likely to be put on hold for the indefinite future due to lack of funding. The Community Development Committee is working to keep the Mitchell-Linden community updated on this issue as well as other concerns around flooding, infrastructure, parking and new residential development. If you would like participate in our committee or have suggestions, please please contact us at mlcaboard@googlegroups.com or P.O. Box 545481, Flushing, N.Y. 11354 |
