History of MLCA Part 5 of 5
As I come to the last and final part of the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association History I first like to thank God for inspring me to write it. I would also like to thank the people who provided me with materials that made it possible for me to complete my task about the history of the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association. Also I’d like to thank all those people who supported the article by reading it and telling me how much they liked it. Finally, I liked to give a special thanks to the now president for the Civic Association, Mrs. Judy Karlin for providing editing support for the articles. In part 4 of 5, we read about some of the past achievements of the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association. I also mentioned that there were other achievements too numerous to mention. Now we are going to read some of the latest achievements of the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association:
  • They fought the test of flight patterns from LaGuardia Airport by cooperating with other civic associations.
  • They held meetings, rallies, and petition drives in order to convince the Borough President, FAA and Port Authority that changing the patterns would affect our community adversely. As a result, tests were stopped and cancelled.
  • They had the Department of Environmental Protection clean out various catch basins in our community where flooding was occurring.
  • In the park area adjacent to P.S. 214, the civic association made the police aware of drug and motorcycles. The Police got rid of drugs and motorcycles accumulating on 31st Drive between Union Street and 140th Street.
  • The Linden Hill Post Office improved their services inside and cleaned up and beautified the outside grounds.
  • With cooperation and help from the Flushing Coalition and Flushing Youth Club, removed graffitti from Union Street on (3) three occasions.
  • They helped prevent the City from making Flushing Airport into a Heliport with private landing, take-off and repair facilities.
  • Not long ago the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association was reponsable to achieving angle parking on 31st Drive by P.S. 214Q which alleviated traffic congestion.
  • They sponsor an annual Vin Etching. In 1993 the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association was presented with two Certificates of Appreciation - one presented by Coalition for a Planned Flushing, in the effort to Free Flushing from Graffiti and a second one “Operation Clean Queens” presented by Claire Shulman, former Queens Borough President.
In May 15, 1999 the civic association received a Certificate of Recognition by Former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. These are only a few of many recognitions that the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association had received for exellence in their work for the community. We should not forget the purpose and aims of the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association is to be a force that can undertake everyone’s problems: The purpose of the organization is to promote and develop neighborliness, good will and cooperative spirit. To promote and strive for the improvement of all public facilities in the surrounding area. Finally all residents 18 years of age or older are welcome to come to our general meetings held four times a year. In our effort to strengthen the civic association we urge you to join us!
