| Dear Neighbor, Nothing can be more gratifying to community leaders than seeing positive results from their efforts for improving the quality of life for their community. During the past year, the Civic Association, the community, and our local legislatures took on two major issues. Through the actions started by Arlene Fleishman, we were alerted to the proposed construction of two high schools on Linden Place. By speaking with one voice, we successfully achieved our goal to the benefit of the community. The Department of Education withdrew their proposal to construct the High Schools. In addition, we formed an action committee which brought community leaders, DEP, and several other agencies together for a site visit regarding the flooding that has plagued our area for years. Graphic photographs, which documented the destruction to personal property, were provided by Harold Silvers, a board member of the Civic Association, and were placed in a chronological album by Brian Lewis, Vice President of the Civic Association, to dramatically present an irrefutable graphic history of past flooding. In addition, Brian Lewis commenced an action in civil court which held the city partly responsible for the damage to one of the buildings. After months of engineering revisions, promises and pressure from our elected officials, a new “Emergency” plan was developed and placed into immediate action. Construction of newly created storm drains will tie into the existing catch basins on 28th road. This will divert the heavy run off to a new pipe that will empty into the storm drain in the service road of the Whitestone Expressway. The work is moving forward at an astounding pace, and we are grateful to the workers and their management for their efforts to limit the inconvenience to local residents. The Mitchell-Linden Civic Association thanks all those who worked toward this end. It demonstrates that when the community stands together and speaks with one voice, people listen, and important things get done. We appreciate and thank Senator Stavisky and Councilman Liu for their support in addressing these issues. Join the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association and help us continue to help those who call this community home. Mitchell-Linden Board of Directors |
